Description

Dawes Galaxy touring bike, steel frame 54cm with 2x drivetrain 6-speed groupset, downtube shifters. Reluctantly selling as it’s too small for me. Would be an excellent commuting / touring bike for someone 5’6″ to 5’8” complete with pannier rack and mudguards (with charming rear reflector). Gear shifting and brakes are in good condition, tires have plenty of life left in them and has recently got a new chain.

Originally purchased as refurbished from Resurrection Bikes in Harrogate, this was bought in October as a winter-ready commuter. This was originally bought to replace a separate steel-frame commuter which was too big at 58cm, so I opted for the 54cm frame hoping it would be more comfortable. However, as I am 5’10” tall, the Dawes is sadly too short.

I have already made some minor adjustments, initially I raised the seat post to a comfortable height for me, but I found that I had raised it so much that the entire post wobbled out of the seat tube. Next step was to replace the seat post with a much longer one so that the saddle is now secure in the seat post, however I found myself leaning too far forward on the handlebars. I felt that the handling was too sharp on the original 70mm stem, which I managed to swap to a 90mm just for that extra bit of control on the steering. Unfortunately, I have had to accept that the bike is simply too small for me and I have, via the ‘goldilocks’ method, bought a replacement that fits. Both the original seat post and stem will be included with the bike, should you wish to return the bike to its original components.

At first I struggled with downtube shifters, I had never tried friction shifting before and found it very uncomfortable until I had got the hang of it, therefore I would recommend this to someone who is already familiar with this old-school shifting method. Once I had got the knack, the shifting felt so quick and secure, and the overall drivetrain feels incredibly smooth and reliable. There is something quite charming and civilised about this bike, once you’re cruising in the right gear it simply glides along.
