Devon based workshop providing high standard bike sales, servicing, repairs & restorations

Hi, I’m Elvin, founder of Crankworks. Being an independent mechanic, you know that the standards you’re getting are the same each time! 100% 5 star Google reviews speak for themselves – “The bike is now looking and running fantastically. Elvin is clearly very knowledgeable and takes time and care with everything he does.”

Although I’ve always had a passion for bikes, it really started in May 2025 when I started my business (after building a workshop in the garden with my dad). Since then I have really thrown myself in the deep end, successfully repairing some of the most abused bikes imaginable. My knowledge and skills have grown so much from being self taught. I do also have some qualifications such as Cycle Systems wheel lacing and truing, and a PDI (pre delivery inspection) certificate.

A small selection of quality used bikes are available to buy on Shifta. Second hand refurbished bikes sold by Crankworks are covered by a 3 month warranty, which is included in the price you see. The Warranty Covers:

  • Mechanical faults with parts fitted during refurbishment
  • Assembly issues discovered after purchase

The warranty does NOT Cover:

  • Puntures
  • Crash damage or accidental damage
  • Damage caused by misuse or lack of maintenance
  • Normal wear and tear (e.g. brake pads, tyres, chains, cables)
  • Water damage rust, or corrosion
  • Any repairs carried out by another mechanic or workshop
  • Parts that were already worn but safe at the time of sale, and priced accordingly
  • Cosmetic imperfections due to the bike being second hand

  • Anything from a quick tune up to a full rebuild
  • Second hand refurbished bike sales
  • Thorough bike health checks
  • Cleaning and detailing
  • Hydraulic and cable brake servicing
  • Bearings: eg. Bottom bracket, headset, hubs etc
  • Wheel and tyre services
  • Gears and drivetrain work
  • Customisation and bar tape wrapping
  • Detailed vintage restorations
  • Fork lower leg service
  • Advice and parts sourcing

We are happy to work on vintage, modern, hybrid, road, gravel, mountain bikes, kids bikes, tandems, BMX and more!

If you’re unsure what your bike needs (for example a “general service”), simply book an inspection and I will assess it fully before recommending any work. For £15 you will get a thorough safety inspection, fault diagnosis, written report and price breakdown for servicing/ repairs. Call/ text 07469731857

Once I’ve had a look over your bike, I will select what works needs doing from my price list and discuss with you. This means you’re only paying for what you actually need rather than a “package”. Example of commonly combined services:

Front & rear brake cables fitted – £20

Front & rear brake pads fitted – £20

Spoke tension / wheel true – £20

Wheel hub service – £25

Total labour – £85

MORE THAN A WORKSHOP

Second hand bikes matter more than ever

Cycling is considered a sustainable method of transport. However, this reputation is tarnished when you consider the amount of perfectly serviceable bikes being thrown away each year, and the amount of brand new bikes being bought. Here’s the figures for UK:

  • Dormant bikes: Around 38 million unused bikes sat in sheds, gardens etc – more than enough to meet current demand.
  • New sales: Around 2 million brand new bicycles sold each year.
  • Direct discards: Estimated 11,000 bikes thrown away annually in north London alone.

While some riders are performance or racing focused, most people use the humble bicycle to just get around or have some leisure time. With the amount of bikes available for refurbishment, buying new makes less sense.

Being a bike mechanic, something I see continuously is people bringing me a bike to check over which they “just bought from Facebook Marketplace”. Until a professional looks at it, they don’t realise that it may need £200 of labour and parts on some occasions. Buying uncertified will always carry this risk. On the other hand, by buying a professionally refurbished & certified bike, you can save money, stress and the environment! £200 on the refurbished bike market will buy you a much higher quality bike than a brand new £200 bike.
